I was gifted a physical hardcopy of "Art Is The Highest Form of Hope & Other Quotes by Artists" a few years ago on my birthday and finally got around to reading it (I'm trying to tackle my over-stuffed TBR shelves).

Very nice! This book boasted a wide variety of quotes that make you ponder about life and your existence in it. Some quotes stayed with me after reading the book:

"Cultivate a well-ordered mind,
it's your only road to happiness;
and to reach it, be orderly in everything,
even in the smallest details."
-Eugene Delacroix

"Color is the place where our brain
meets the universe."
-Paul Cezanne

"I don't talk about success.
I don't know what it is.
Wait until I'm dead."
-Imogen Cunningham

My thoughts were peeled like a banana while reading this book. The quotes were wise, cheeky, jaded, sarcastic, melancholic... a lot of times just a few basic words- but they were loaded with deep meaning... a window to the soul in a particular moment in time. It almost felt like I was reading snippets of a stranger's diary.

One small drawback I encountered is that this book almost broke my wrists because it weighed so heavily. I had to prop it on a pillow at one point to ease the stress. (I am not going to deduct points because of my personal experience.) The dark blue and white font gave the cover a stoic look. Each quote was presented in a different sized font. The style was not consistent either but it gave off an appealing overall look to the book. As a reader, I was not bored by the choice of formatting. Creativity and originality in presentation was clearly a goal here. I appreciate the effort.

In my humble opinion, it is definitely a book worth reading.

Love love love this!!!

Lately I've been a bit quotes obsessed, and I've been wanting to read this one for a while. For anyone who works in a creative environment, or has a fascination for arts in general, this is a must read.
There's an intimacy at reading the thoughts made into quotes of famous artists, offering us a glimpse into their process, way of living, every day and even their opinions on art related cliches.
Of course there's a bunch of remarkable quotes on this book, but a couple of my favorite:

· "One must go on working silently, trusting the result to the future" Vicent Van Gogh
· "You have to learn to feel confident about the prospect of failing, because it's so inevitable" Andrea Zittel
· "Work with ideas, what matters above all is the goal -What you want to achieve, to provoke with a work" Mona Hatoum

A wonderful read, I enjoyed every page :D

This is one of those rare finds I stumped upon while browsing Waterstones and knew I had to purchase it immediately. This books offers various quotes from artists both well known and unknown. I find this book to be very inspirational as it is great for those days where you are feeling low about your creative endeavours. This is a great reminder that all artists have started from the bottom and worked there way up.

Was ok. considering it was a book about art the type setting in the book drove me crazy. It made no sense. The cover was beautiful and wish they just stick to simple and let the content drive. Beings me to the second point. Even if you ignore the poor type setting, The quotes were meh, at best. I'm not really a quote hater or lover. They just didn't feel punchy. Worth a read if it's laying around though.

Wonderful collection of quotes, cleverly chosen and from hard to find sources a.k.a. pre-internet books, interviews, essays, etc. Being a Phaidon book, it's also wonderfully laid-out and designed with nice typography and subtle patterns. I look forward to seeing this book on my bookshelf for years to come.

These quotes are from artists and other creatives. Not necessarily all famous, either. The quotes are gathered by topic. An excellent reference if you are looking for inspiration and some wildly different approaches to success, failure, friends, and life.
